Niseko, Otaru Summer and Autumn Activity Spots
A vast area in the western part of Hokkaido is called “Shiribeshi”.
It is a popular tourist area with many of Hokkaido’s representative tourist destinations, including Otaru City, 13 towns and 6 villages, Niseko Town and Kutchan Town at the foot of Mt. Yotei, Yoichi Town famous for its whiskey and wine, and Shakotan Town facing the beautiful sea called “Shakotan Blue.
In this issue, we will introduce some of the activities that can be enjoyed from summer to autumn in the Niseko and Otaru area.
■Niseko Town
Niseko Town is a very popular tourist destination, world famous for its world-class powder snow ski resorts. Outside of the ski season, there are plenty of activities to enjoy the natural beauty of Hokkaido.
Mt. Yotei, also known as “Ezo Fuji” (meaning “Mt. Fuji in Hokkaido”), which can be seen from Niseko, is one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan and represents Hokkaido.

■Otaru City
Otaru City is a port town that once flourished through trade as the gateway to Hokkaido, and is particularly popular among tourists for its romantic scenery of historic stone warehouses. Hakodate, another Hokkaido port town and a famous tourist destination, is located in the same area, but Otaru is close to Sapporo and offers easy access to Niseko, Yoichi, Shakotan, and the rest of the Koshi region, making it a particularly good place to stay as a base for a trip to Hokkaido.
